A decade ago, mental health was a taboo topic. No one spoke about depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and more, but times are changing. One of the ways the stigma surrounding mental health is fading is through celebrities using their platform to normalize their experiences and educate others about mental health. Take NBA superstar DeMar DeRozan, for example. In the middle of the 2018 NBA All-Star break, he used the heightened attention to bring people’s attention to the problem of depression, admitting his own struggles with the illness. “It’s one of them things that no matter how indestructible we look like we are, we’re all human at the end of the day,” DeRozan said. Fans responded with overwhelming affirmation and many shared stories of their own. Everyone struggles with something, DeRozan reminded NBA fans and a watching world. It is okay to reach out for help with struggling with mental illness.
“One small crack does not mean that you are broken,
it means that you were put to the test and you didn’t fall apart.”
–Linda Poindexter
The licensed mental health professionals at Thriveworks Counseling in Wilmington, NC have worked with many people who are facing many different circumstances, and as DeRozan says, at the end of the day, we are all human. We all struggle. We all have cracks, but that does not mean we are broken. Maybe those cracks just mean we need a little help. As the old saying says, “when we know better, we do better.” Therapy, counseling, and life coaching is often the place where people learn to care for their mental health and put what they have learned into practice. If you’re interested in working with a therapist in Wilmington, NC in-person or online, give us a call.
If there is one constant in life, it is that life is constantly changing. There are highs. There are lows. There are joys and opportunities as well as setbacks and challenges. Despite life’s chaos, people have a lot of control. In particular, they can control how they respond to life’s ups and downs. Think about these situations. What would it look like to have support, guidance, and help as you responded to these situations?
When you think about your life right now, you may be able to relate to one of these situations. Or you may be facing a completely different challenge. We are all facing something. We all need a safe place in the midst of the challenge—a place where we can be open and honest without fear of being judged or shamed. We all need a place where we can talk and acknowledge hurt and find healing. Many people find that safe place by working with a counselor, therapist, or psychologist. Sometimes, a little support and guidance make all the difference.
Mental health care is all about the therapeutic relationship between a mental health practitioner and their client, and like any relationship, the foundation of mental health care is trust. When clients trust their clinicians, they often feel safe to delve into many different topics and explore deep wounds. The deeper clients delve, the deeper healing they may experience. No list can give every topic up for discussion in therapy, but many clients choose to explore…
We offer marriage counseling, cognitive behavioral therapy, trauma counseling, depression therapy, stress management, anger management, and many other forms of mental health care. In any case, mental health care often has a past and a future element. Clients often work through past trauma and pain, but they also often work toward a future. Therapy is often the place where people can clarify their hopes and dreams and build a life they want—both in their personal and professional lives. Mental health care is often an empowering journey of self-discovery.
