Randall is a young father with a heart of gold. His love for his young children and wife is palpable, and he works hard to provide for them. Randall does not just want to do things the right way. He wants to do them perfectly, and when life is not perfect, Randall’s anxiety rises. In fact, anxiety has secretly plagued Randall since he was a child until one day, he could not hold it together anymore. Randall had a panic attack while attending a play.
The hit show, This Is Us, gives a glimpse into the realities of what it is like to struggle with a mental illness through one of its lead characters, Randall. The show resonates with so many people’s experiences. It does not shy away from the secrecy that can surround mental illness, the shame that often plagues individuals, and the challenges of recovery. But most importantly, This Is Us also portrays the joy that all people can experience and how mental illness does not have to hold them back. Howie Mandel expresses a similar thought:
“There isn’t anybody out there who doesn’t have a mental health issue, whether it’s depression, anxiety, or how to cope with relationships. Having OCD is not an embarrassment anymore – for me. Just know that there is help and your life could be better if you go out and seek the help.”
What if capturing life’s beauty and possibilities were possible despite the inevitable setbacks, hardships, and challenges? It is, and many people are working with a counselor, therapist, psychiatrist, or life coach to learn how. As Howie says, help is out there, and life can be better.
Thriveworks in Chattanooga understands the challenges that any mental illness can bring to an individual’s life, and we have also seen people overcome those challenges and thrive. Our life coaches, therapists, psychiatrists, and counselors work with an array of clients who are all fighting for the life they want.
If life is a storm, mental health services are often the safe harbor. Life can be busy, disorienting, and chaotic. Stepping back to breathe, reflect, and reorient oneself is often one of the best but hardest things for people to do. Mental health professionals can often guide people as they gain perspective and find a path forward. With a safe, non-judgmental place to process, clients often find clarity instead of chaos.
Skilled therapists have often walked the road of recovery with many people, and they can often help people bypass common pitfalls. One example of a common hazard that leaves people stuck is blame. While it is a natural and common response, blame is rarely a helpful response. Assigning fault can initially feel powerful, but in the end, it leaves people helpless. Instead of focusing upon what people can do for themselves, blame focuses people’s attention on what other people have or have not done—something they have no control over.
A more empowered and positive stance is to live proactively and from one’s own values. This posture requires courage because it often means people need to make difficult adjustments in their lives. This may means making room in your life for treatment or having a difficult conversation with a loved one. No one has to walk through these adjustments alone. Mental health care was once plagued with social stigma, but that stigma is fading. More and more people are receiving the help they need to make important life changes.
Tough choices and life adjustments are often an endeavor that requires short-term discomfort but ask anyone who had gone through a mental health journey and they will likely say, it was all worth the effort. They will also likely say that they could not have done it without help. A few of the reasons the clients at Thriveworks Chattanooga have reached out for help from our staff include…
Sometimes, mental health issues fit into a label, and sometimes, they do not. What is happening in your life may or may not be on this list. Know that it is normal for people to begin therapy knowing what they want out of it. Know that it is also normal for people to begin therapy not knowing what they want to achieve. There is no right way to begin therapy. The important part is taking that first step if you think mental health services would be beneficial for you.
If you’re suffering from a mental or emotional disorder, you may benefit from speaking to a licensed psychiatrist. Psychiatry is a field of medicine that involves looking at mental illness from both a physical and mental standpoint. Given how intertwined the mind and body can be, a physician’s perspective is often extremely beneficial when it comes to diagnosis and treatment.
Having completed medical school, a psychiatrist can evaluate your physical symptoms and also prescribe medication. They can monitor your physical health throughout your treatment and ensure any potential side effects from medication are addressed. They can also perform psychotherapy or administer other talk therapy options to help you overcome your mental health concerns.
